Engine choice on the Tucson is straightforward but generation-specific. The JM was built around the G4GC 2.0 Beta petrol and a 2.7 Delta V6, with the D4EA 2.0 CRDi diesel for fleet buyers. The LM/ix35 brought in the G4KD 2.0 Theta II petrol and the D4HA 2.0 CRDi diesel. The TL introduced the G4NA 2.0 Nu, the 1.6 T-GDI and the D4FD 1.7 CRDi alongside the new 7-speed dual-clutch box. Theta II 2.4 engine knock — what to know

Honest disclosure up front: the Theta II 2.4 GDI petrol (the G4KJ — fitted to the Tucson's related Sonata and Santa Fe siblings, and to imported US-spec Tucsons) has been the subject of large engine recalls in the US. The fault is a connecting-rod bearing failure that announces itself with a metallic knock from the bottom end, drops oil pressure and ultimately seizes the engine. Hyundai and Kia settled class actions in the US on this issue and rolled out a Knock Sensor Detection System software update plus extended warranties on affected engines. If you are buying a used 2.4 — or you are hearing knock on any Theta II — replace the short block or the full engine. Ask us for a quote on a used Theta II unit, and ask any supplier for the donor mileage and warranty terms in writing.

Beyond the engine, common Tucson replacements are bumpers, side mirrors, headlight assemblies, AC condensers and the A6MF1 6-speed automatic gearbox on the LM and TL.
