The Santa Fe has been Hyundai SA's flagship 7-seat SUV since 2000. The CM brought the seminal D4HB 2.2 CRDi diesel into the range. The DM was the volume seller in SA, with the Lambda II 3.3 V6 in top trims and Theta II 2.4 in entry trims. The TM modernised the platform with an 8-speed automatic on diesel and brought the 2.0T Theta II as a petrol option. The brand-new MX5 (2023+) switched to the Smartstream D4HE diesel and added a hybrid Theta-derived petrol.
The most-talked-about Santa Fe issue in South Africa is the D4HB 2.2 CRDi injector failure on CM, DM and TM cars — typically presenting as rough idle, misfires under load, white smoke or excess diesel return-flow. The fault is usually traced to carbon fouling and worn nozzle tips, and at high mileage the high-pressure pump often goes with the injectors. We stock tested D4HB injectors, full long-block D4HB engines from low-km donor vehicles, and the Bosch high-pressure pumps that feed them.
