Engines and gearboxes — G4KD Theta II and D4HA CRDi

Two engines do almost all the work on the ix35. The G4KD 2.0 Theta II is the petrol unit — a multi-port-injected 2.0 litre paired with the 6-speed A6MF1 automatic or the M6CF1 manual. The D4HA 2.0 CRDi is the diesel — common-rail with a variable-geometry turbo. A lower-volume G4NC 2.0 Nu was offered in some markets. Common faults across both engines follow standard CRDi territory: injector wear (test before replacing), turbo actuator failure, and on the petrol G4KD, occasional timing chain rattle on high-kilometre units. Transmission-wise the A6MF1 6-speed automatic is the common box, and we can quote on used units. The transfer case for AWD models uses an electronic coupling, not a traditional 4WD setup, and replacement is usually cheaper than a full rebuild. For bodywork, the ix35 shares almost everything with the LM-generation Tucson — front bumpers, fenders, doors, tailgates, mirrors, headlights, tail lights are all interchangeable. Inside the cabin the dashboard, seats and trim are also LM-shared. Common body replacements are the front bumper (parking-lot damage is common), headlight assemblies (the projector units yellow with age and the headlight washer covers regularly go walkabout), the side mirror housings, and the tailgate. Sun-bleached interior trim — particularly the dashboard top — is a separate problem, and a clean used unit is worth considering if your interior is starting to crack.

On pricing, a used CRDi diesel engine's value depends heavily on injector condition and turbo health, so ask about both when you buy. Body panels are shared with the Tucson LM, which widens the options. Ask us for a quote on any of them.
